{"id":423,"date":"2012-08-18T11:21:48","date_gmt":"2012-08-18T16:21:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/facultycorner.com\/main\/?p=423"},"modified":"2015-05-13T21:46:43","modified_gmt":"2015-05-14T02:46:43","slug":"best-practices-for-digital-citizenship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/facultycorner.com\/main\/2012\/08\/18\/best-practices-for-digital-citizenship\/","title":{"rendered":"Best Practices for Digital Citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are you adding a virtual classroom or social media site to your lessons? \u00a0 Many of us are trying out edmodo.com, moodle, or other digital resources to enhance our lessons. \u00a0 \u00a0If you are attempting to foster engagement and collaboration, these guidelines might be a good place to start to teach your students about digital citizenship. \u00a0 \u00a0Print these onto a large page to post in your classroom or computer lab. \u00a0 You can also also download the color version from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.edmodo.com\/2012\/04\/30\/free-download-digital-citizenship-poster\/\">http:\/\/blog.edmodo.com<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong id=\"internal-source-marker_0.9671567610930651\">Best Practices for Digital Citizenship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0Be present. \u00a0Participate in classroom discussions and contribute your unique voice to the conversation<br \/>\n2. \u00a0Use appropriate grammar instead of texting language.<br \/>\n3. \u00a0Use a respectful tone of voice when posting. \u00a0Refrain from posts that tease, bully, annoy, spam, or gossip.<br \/>\n4. \u00a0Keep conversations on topic.<br \/>\n5. \u00a0Keep private information private. \u00a0This includes telephone numbers, addresses, emails, etc.<br \/>\n6. \u00a0Be sure to get permission before posting photos or videos showing yourself or classmates.<br \/>\n7. \u00a0Show what you know. \u00a0If you\u2019ve found information or have an idea that\u2019s related to our classwork, share it.<br \/>\n<em>~Source: \u00a0Edmodo.com<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You might also be considering ways to assess online discussions and forums. \u00a0 How will you get students to participate in meaningful ways? \u00a0 \u00a0These protocols may help students understand that online discussions aren&#8217;t just about saying &#8220;I agree&#8221; or &#8220;good idea&#8221;. \u00a0 Encourage students to elaborate, share, and rephrase ideas.<\/p>\n<h3>Protocol for Posting<\/h3>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<table>\n<colgroup>\n<col width=\"692\" \/><\/colgroup>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>1. Postings should be evenly distributed during the discussion period (not concentrated all on one day or at the beginning and\/or end of the period).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>2. Postings should be a minimum of one short paragraph and a maximum of two paragraphs.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>3. Avoid postings that are limited to &#8216;I agree&#8217; or &#8216;great idea&#8217;, etc. If you agree (or disagree) with a posting then say why you agree by supporting your statement with concepts from the readings or by bringing in a related example or experience.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>4. Address the questions as much as possible (don&#8217;t let the discussion stray).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>5. Try to use quotes from the articles that support your postings. Include page numbers when you do that.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>6. Build on others responses to create threads.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>7.
